To the OP. I will always opt for 4 on the ground. The reason is you can lock the steering on the frog and back it like a trailer. Not so with the Tow Dolly. I've been backing mine for years with no problem.
You are correct in your assumption.
I wouldn't even consider it with my front engine CRV not to mention that the steering wheel is locked only when in park. It's generally not good advice to suggest backing up this type of equipment.
Having said that some have posted backing a few feet with no issues.
