You are correct in your assumption.

You appear to have a VW bug which has a very light front end so perhaps you can back OK.

I wouldn't even consider it with my front engine CRV not to mention that the steering wheel is locked only when in park. It's generally not good advice to suggest backing up this type of equipment.

Having said that some have posted backing a few feet with no issues.

Every person should know their limitations. I have had no problems backing a GMC 4x4 3500 series behind a 37' Itaska MH.
BTW I'm not aware of any front wheel drive that one can tow with 4 on the ground without serious modifications.
Here is a TRIPLE that I backed 200' because someone double parked.
