Toad questions...

I installed a base plate myself in a Hyundia and I used diodes for the lights. 6 diodes, two for the left turn/brake, two for the right and two for the parking lights. I got a flat four wire and ran it to the front.

If your Blue Ox system is of the same vintage as mine, it does use a seven pin to six pin umbilical from the motor home to the toad.

Had a 2005 Saturn. I made a fuse disconnect by shorting out the fuse, soldering leads to the test points on the blown fuse, and running a line into the cab with a pullable fuse. Could have used a switch, but this worked. If you have a hot line coming from the MH in the umbilical you could run a trickle charge to the toad battery and not bother with the fuse. I towed a few times on short trips, less than 2 hours, without pulling the fuse and never had a problem. If you don't pull the fuse and it gets dark outside the sensors will turn on the headlights and the battery will draw down rather quickly...don't ask me how I know. Happy Trails.

I was looking for a kit of parts and wires but it looks from what Amazon carries that it would make more sense to buy components and make up my own kit.

Another option if you have room is to add another dedicated bulb to the taillight housing that is dedicated just for being a toad. I have done this to jeeps and one Saturn. Just drill a hole in the housing to accept the bulb and run wires underneath to the front, plug into the MH and away we go. No diodes, no cutting factory wire, nice and easy.

Hah, neat idea Discovery4us, and a few years ago I would have done it that way just for the fun. Now though, I think instead I'll tie into the cars wiring in the trunk. Looks to be a simple job. Wiring is easily accessible and although the car is a 2001, it's very clean, and no rust! Only has 61,000 on it too.

Just get wireless tow lights and make it easy :)

My Saturn is over at a body shop having the tow bar installed and I thought I'd get to work on checking the electrical here on the RV.

So I turn the ignition to run, turn on the running lights, and turn on the left flasher. With my drawing of typical 7-Pin RV wiring in hand I went in back and measured voltages. NOTHING! Not a single volt where it was suppose to be. Nothing on a single electrical tab. Then I moved my DVMs ground lead from what's suppose to be ground, directly to chassis and tested again. Still not a single volt. I followed the wire bundle as far back as I could, and everything looked fine.

Gah!

I know the PO towed because they left me their Blue Ox tow bar, their Brake Buddy, and the manuals. But there's no electrical signals or power on the trailer connector?

Any ideas? Is there some secret junction box on a Winnebago Journey 2002 DP?

I'm big on wiring my vehicles myself, but often these kits make life simple for a few more dollars. Two things you need to be aware of. First, check to see if the brake lights on the Saturn come on when the vehicle is off (as if it's being towed). The reason for this......if you wire in diodes to operate the Saturn's lights, the brake lights on the Saturn (if they come on when turned off) will override the turn signals if you are stopped at a signal or applying the brakes.

Second, your coach comes with a simple 4 wire system, left/brake, right/brake, running and ground. Your Saturn with separate turn signals will not function with the simple four wire system. You can wire it so that the brake lights on the Saturn can also be the turn signals, or by a converter that converts your simple four wire to basically a six wire, which will decipher between brake and turn signal and allow you to use the Saturn's turn signals and brake lights separately.

Freightliner uses fuses for the left turn, right turn and brake lights. You need to find those and make sure they're good. On my Freightliner, there is a fuse box adjacent to the starting batteries.

Side Note:....When I owned my Monaco, over the years I knew/learned where all the 12 volt fuses were located (3 different areas). When I bought my Dutch Star 2 years ago, I decided to find the fuses and document them. I located four different areas where they had placed 12 volt fuses. I photographed them and then documented them by name/use in a Word program. I keep the photos and description in a note book in the coach. When I need to find a fuse, I look in the book and go straight to that part of the coach.
