We use them because the alternative is often more expensive in fuel usage.

I NEVER avoid a toll road it that's the route that gets me from point A to point B in the least amount of time and the least amount of fuel used.
Do I like it? Not even a little bit! Do I let that govern my life and the realities of my travels? Not even a little bit! Let say you were in Port Townsend, WA and wanted to go to Tacoma. You could take the toll road or hop on the ferry. Anyone care to do the math on that? Want to get from the DC area to Ocean City, MD? How are you going to get there? I know I am using the bridge!
If you have nothing to do and don't care when you get there (or how much you paid) then avoid ALL toll roads. In thinking about that last statement, I would actually appreciate that consideration as that means less traffic for me as I travel that tollway! It's a choice folks. I make mine, you make yours and we are both going to be happy.

I run the numbers. Tolls, distance, fuel cost and such and will take the most economical route. Travel time is considered but is pretty low on the priority list when planning.

We took the toll road around Houston today and it cost us $21 for the truck and travel trailer. It SURE was a lot less stressful. There was very little traffic on the toll road.

We avoid them. Not ever in any particular hurry.

I use an EZ-PASS. Much simpler and the toll rates are often lower, especially since I don't have to argue about which tariff they should be using (is the RV a car or a truck, etc)

I might add. My GPS is programmed to avoid toll rioads.

We typically try to avoid them. However with that being said we quickly realized if we intended to get anywhere in a reasonable amount of time in the Northeast we had to pay the tolls. Considering how far we went they really were not as expensive as we thought they would be. On the flip side of the coin we took a toll road in Houston which I believe was HWY 1960. It cost a fortune to travel a short distance. It did not take long for us to jump off and find our own route.

Roads need to be maintained and tolls help to maintain those roads. Once while driving from Ft. Wayne, IN to Buffalo I was in a pretty bad snow storm from NE Ohio across PA. The roads were brutal with snow and ice. I hit the toll road in NY and the roads were clear and wet. My safety and the safety of my family are far more important than a few dollars.
