toll roads

You can get most of the way across country with no tolls. Go to 70 and take that across to Indy then run up to 80 on 74. Then when you have a number of options to go up to 90. I run cross country all the time. I usually head north in the spring around I 35 in the summer and fall I go to SD and turn north to 90. You can cross country that way with no tolls. It is not much further then the pa pike and the Ohio turnpike. That way you will pay tolls in PA, OH, IN and IL.

Cost me $10 to cross the bridge with my coach and toad, $2.50 per axle. Had I crossed the same river on I-287 a little farther down river it would have been $30.

I like to help the folks who use the toll roads. My GPS is also programmed to not only avoid toll roads, but unpaved roads and Interstates....I'm just not in that big a hurry to get somewhere....over the past five years traveling 42 States, we've paid exactly $19.80 in tolls. Once in California and once crossing the Mackinac Bridge......Dennis

Don't confuse the fact that I use them with any sort of indication that I like them. We were on a toll road in CA and I believe the toll was around $13.00. Our exit was the next one up (about 1 mile) and if you had stayed on this road for another 15 miles there would have been no additional tolls. I just happened to draw the short straw. Even knowing that, the alternate route would have taken much more time and fuel even considering the short distance I actually traveled.

I avoid them. But then again I usually won't even use the same roads when returning to the 5er.

Most toll roads are east of the Mississippi. Our worst experience with them is I 80 from Chicago to Ohio. Every few minutes you hand over another 20 bucks. As payback the roads suck. The condition is third World. Next time we go through the area I am avoiding that road no matter what.

Avoid them when we can. It used to take about five dollars, in gas, but twenty dollars, in tolls to go down Florida.
