Pretty much "the Grapevine" is from Castaic in the south to Grapevine the town in the north. Steeper going into the central valley than the Santa Clarita valley but a big hill either direction. :B
The traditional name for the highway from the Newhall area to ths San Joaquin Valley is the Ridge Route. The Grapevine is the grade going thru Grapevine Canyon at the north end going into the valley, and the grade from the mountain going down into Castaic is the Castaic grade. Also, if you check with Caltrans you will find both grades have the same gradient at six (6) per cent which is the maximum grade for interstate highways.
