I always have the DW to gently back up which snaps the lock into place. I checked with NSA and they said that was a ok way to do it. If we don't do it that way I just cut the volume up on the rear camera and you can hear them snap into place while driving out of the cg.
I do the same thing when she's available at hook up time, but I also do it myself at times. With practice, getting the toad pretty well centered at the right distance becomes easier. If nothing else, as you said, they'll snap into place as you pull the coach ahead anyway.
