When I still had my Subaru with a manual transmission, I did flat towing. I changed vehicles lately, and I tow with a dolly, and find this almost as easy as flat towing. My dolly has surge brakes and friction steering, and it follows the motorhome better than any full size trailer would, and it is lightweight
Backing up might be an argument against a dolly, but it is also one against flat towing. In reality, how often do you have to back up with a vehicle in tow? I was never ever in an situation that required this, a little planning can go a long way to prevent it!
