Ive Never Towed anything 4 Down So excuse the lack of Knoweldge here, BUT Why cant you back up with one? What prevents it?
Because the front wheels will try and turn into the direction the toad is going. So when going backwards they will slam to one side or the other and then you will be pushing them sideways and at the same time putting extreme pressures on your towbar in a direction that it is not designed to take those pressures.
Like Mowermech, I tried to back my Jeep Wrangle up once and I didn't get 5 feet like he did. As soon as I started I could see the steering wheel spin pretty violently to one side. Now my understanding is not all vehicles are as sensitive as this when being pushed backwards and some of them when you are perfectly straight can be pushed for some distance. At least that is the stories that people on here have told, I never tried backing with any other vehicles.
Several years back a participant here told a story of breaking both his wife's arms while having her try and hold the steering wheel of the toad while it was backed up and I've seen people here tell stories of doing it and not having any problems. I guess it depends on how much you like your wife if you want to try it or not.
