While the story itself is a hoax, it's not correct that these cameras are only used for red light violations.
I got pulled over a couple of years ago for not having my truck registered. I either forgot to do it, or simply never got the notice. There were no cops on the street where I got pulled over. The red light camera in this particular municipality just take pictures of everyone's plates and alerts a squad if there are known violations. They didn't make a dime off of me because it's just a "fix it" ticket. Get the vehicle registration up to date and you're good to go.
