My brother had the same issue on his 88 Holiday Rambler. He took it to a transmission shop and they dropped the pan and replaced a plastic spiral gear that had something to do with it not shifting out of first. It cost $125.00 for parts and labor. The shop said this was a common occurrence.
Call a local transmission shop and they should be able to tell you if you may have the same issue.
