I would prefer to take 395 north from LA over I-5 all the time, well except maybe not in the middle of winter. The scenery creates my preference, not even considering the traffic or road surface conditions.
The route is more curvy, and fuel prices may generally be higher, yes. Those concerns are not issues for us.
