If you are going to be in Reno,NV why don't you drive south on 395 to Lee Vining and take 120 over Tioga pass to Yosemite.
You can then head for the Pacific coast and take 101 North through San Francisco, Napa Valley , the Redwoods, Crescent City and then Oregon and Washington.
I wouldn't suggest that route to somebody from Florida.
I'm not sure I'd take it and I've driven in mountains a lot.
Which part wouldn't you recommend? We are planning a trip including Seattle - Portland - San Francisco - Yosemite. I would love to visit Redwoods on our way to San Francisco but I am not sure if it is worth the hours of 2 lane windy roads. Hubby doesn't mind driving but prefers the interstates to get from one campground to the next. Then we tour with the truck. For comparison the "tourist drivers" made him crazy for the one day we spent on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I was thinking I would settle for camping north of SF and visiting Muir Woods before heading to Yosemite. From Yosemite we will likely head to Vegas and Grand Canyon before heading back east.
We will have about 2 weeks for that portion of trip. I think our rig is in my sig but we are traveling in a F350 CC DRW with 3 kids (8,11,15) and a dog, pulling a 34 foot 5th wheel.
He's most likely talking about RT 120 between Moccasin and Yosemite's entrance. Going east it will be a steep twisting uphill climb and in contrast, we came down that way out of the park and proceeded west while stopping off in an Oakdale campground for the night. Then proceeded into the wine country and picked up the coast line well north of SF. One of the highlights of the trip, was the Avenue of the Giants off of 101 and can't imagine bypassing that road through the Redwood forest. In Cresent City there's a decent campground on the ocean for an overnight's stay or more.
