WHEN IS EARLIEST TIME TO TRAVEL SO AS NOT TO ENCOUNTER SNOW OR ICE IN EARLY 2016?

I travelled from the Florida Panhandle to Montana two years ago. We went in early May and saw a little snow in the upper elevations, but the roads were all clear. I've seen 18 inches of snow fall on Memorial day, so nothing is guaranteed.
