tv freezing problem

I have a Jack head on a crank up mast. When watching local channels I get freezing of the pic. Sometimes the pic will completely go black for hours. Sometimes it works great for long periods then stop or freeze.
Do these heads go bad or is the wiring at fault. Tv works great on cable.
Anyone have any ideas where to start?

Band conditions change... As the band "Fades" out you loose contact with the staiton, A more powerful antenna (Winegard Sensar IV with Sensar Pro for example) might be able to hold it.. Or not depending on how deeply it fades.

At UHF frequencies even the sun affects the signal strength. As do sun spots and many other things.

I have sat here in my motor home listening to people talking on High Frequency (A thousand times the wavelength) and heard them go from "Next door" quality to "Where'd they go" in less than an hour. UHF is not usually that bad, but it can be.
  • Get a SureLock Digital Signal finder to help you aim the antenna.

Second, its like others said, its a weak signal and there is nothing you can do about it. Remember in the old days when you got unwatchable snow with a weak signal? Freezing, black screens, and digitized screens are the equivalent of snow in the digital TV world.
  • I use an a Droid app called TV Antenna Helper. It allows you to tune your antenna by letting you know direction and miles TV signals are coming from.
  • We have that problem all the time, depending on how strong the channel signal is and what the weather is doing.

Also, we have a fan wired on the same circuit as one of our tvs. If the signal is weak and the fan is turned on, the signal goes away.

Sometimes, our two tvs on the same antenna pick up different channels (one will get 10 channels, the other will get 15). Sometimes a channel will go out on one tv but not the other. This is due to the tv's internal electronics, not the antenna.

eta: our Samsung picks up more channels than our Sanyo.

That makes no sense at all. Backwards is really forward... What?
The FRONT of the antenna is that which is the opposite side of the mast, and that's the focal point of the antenna, nowhere else.

OP- Some LED's can play havoc as stated above, or you are simply far enough from the transmitter site that you are on the threshold of the receiver, and when you say several hours at a time, that's my guess because the weather is affecting you.

Short of replacing the Jack with a better deep fringe antenna and adding something like a SensarPro that will permit precise pointing, and add enough gain to compensate for line and splitter losses, you're kind of at the mercy of the inversion moving around with no way to overcome it.

If you have LED LIGHTS installed in the unit try turning off all of them when this happens and see if one of those is causing your HDTV to lose it's signal which makes the screen freeze.

LED LIGHTS are know to interrupt HDTV signals when turned on.

  • I loose my signal when I put the bedroom or bathroom lights/fans on. When I turn off the lights/fans the TV works just fine. Works for me, might not for you?

  • The freeze up and blank screens are most likely a loss of signal due to either too great a distance or not aiming the antennae correctly. With a digital signal you either get a perfect picture or none at all so no more fuzzy or snowy pictures on weak stations. Those weak stations just are not available or available only at some times when atmosphere conditions will allow.
  • Just our updated Digital TV service we get now.
Something we just have to live with.
Other option Satellite or cable in the RV PK.
