I have also mounted one. But I had an advantage in that I tore the whole rig apart and rebuilt.
When I rebuilt it, I made sure to put some solid 1x pine inside the wall where I knew I was going to mount the TV. This gave me something solid to screw into, so I just used standard wood screws. You can see the finished product in the second picture down on
this page. Further down the page, you can see some of the 1x I put in to mount things to.
But before that, I had tried to wall mount a TV and had all sorts of problems. The walls, of course, were 1/16" luan skins on a hollow core. The weight of the TV tended to cause them to warp and buckle. It wasn't pretty. I eventually mounted a piece of 1x on the other side of the wall (it was inside a cabinet), and used bolts to get all the way through. It was better, but not great.
