Your beam from the remote is more like a flash bulb than a flashlight. It spreads quite wide rather than a tight beam. Try making some shades from black paper or tape to restrict the direction. Hint,. You can't see the infared, but if you lower the light a bit and use the camera on your cell phone, you can see the infared light on the camera screen.
