Type of radiator fluid

Hi there everyone,

DW and I bought a 2003 Allegro Bus 3 years ago. It has a 350 Cummins in it. It are needing to replace the surge tank and when we picked up the tank at the Freightliner dealer, we were going to pick up some ES Compleat coolant. The guy behind the counter said, "... thats the blue stuff" and I was like 'Ok, what does that mean'. He asked what color my coolant was and I told him I wasn't sure. He indicated that I should find out the color before I go adding something. So, I came home and drained a little bit of coolant from the petcock and found it to be a yellowish/amber color, more yellow than amber. I wasn't sure if this was an earlier version of ES Compleat, or if it was 'Extended life' coolant.

Does anyone know what that color indicates? I bought test strips for the coolant, but based on what type of coolant I have I either need to replace the coolant, or I'm ok.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

  • Your chassis maker determine cooling "package" and is the proper source for total cooling system capacity.

Let us now if you want detailed coolant changing instructions.

Ok, so since it is a 40 foot Deisel pusher with a side mounted radiator, does anyone know how much coolant I should be prepared to put in the beast?

    Thanks!

Call Tiffin customer service and they can advise you. Mine takes 50-55 qts but yours will no doubt be different.

  • No question, particularly since you know neither the age nor chemistry of present coolant, drain, flush and go with new coolant.
  • we have an 04 Country Coach Allure and we had it flushed and ES Compleat added. Cummins Coach Care in Tulsa did the work. Very pleased with them.
  • X2 on drain and change the coolant. I use EScomplete & have it tested yearly.

Coolant in Diesel engines is a fairly complex subject. Since your coolant is at minimum 3 years old, the prudent thing would be to change it out and then you'll know. The ES Compleat is an excellent coolant with more scaling protection than most. Coolant performs another important function besides cooling. The level of SCA/DCA in the coolant is very important to the long term health of the engine.
  • Since your coach is 10 yrs old, I would consider a flush and refill. That way you can use new long life coolant and mixing won't be an issue.
  • I went through a similar thing with a Newmar on a Spartan chassis. It's important to use the right stuff. And the color isn't always the correct indicator. I would call Tiffin and ask what they spec. and use that. Or you could post your question on IRV2 on the Tiffin forum.
