I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but the Ford website (correctly) lists the E series stripped chassis as having a 6 speed transmission for 2017. I think they switched to it from the five speed starting with the 2016 model year.
The six speed is definitely a nicer transmission to drive than the five speed (or the older but closely related four speed); the gaps between the upper gears in particular are a good bit less extreme.
