Upgrade cabinet hardware

I know I can buy new cabinet hardware for my coach but I've read that some have 'repainted' their's. There are somewhere around 100 knobs and handles. To me, it doesn't sound like the paint would hold up and the paint would wear off after a while. Has anyone done that and how did it hold up after a few years of wear and tear?

Even if it works, I'm not sure I want to do it. All the gold colored hardware is in good shape but I guess it's kinda dated.
  • I forgot about all the hinges. I guess I would have to add an additional 50 or 75 more pieces. Obviously this would not be a project to complete in a day.

For those that have painted, did you sand them before the primer/paint? That sounds hard to do, due to the odd shapes and small sizes.

I have a Habitat for Humanity near me and they have a lot of cabinet hardware. I'll check to see what they have.
  • Find a RV surplus store. We bought knobs that were selling at Home Depot for almost 5 bucks for a dollar each at a surplus store
  • I just replaced all the H/W in our TT. If you buy hinges and knobs in bulk packages at Home Depot or even Costco a lot cheaper. I took the opportunity to replace everything "brass" with brushed nickel, including light fixtures and the bath faucet. It really made the trailer look newer inside and I dont think any spray paint would have done the same.
  • If you do it, use primer as it can really make the paint last longer.
  • I spray painted cabinet handles and pulls from kitchen of a previous S&B home. Prepped hardware well, used good paint and it held up well.

In that case, I did it because it I was unable to find nicer hardware that fit same holes, and I did not like the idea of patched up old holes in cabinets. Hopefully yours will be a standard size, so you will have the choice to paint or replace. Measure and go shopping. Maybe you will find some hardware you like for an nice price. Or maybe you will find a paint you want to try.
  • $1.00 for a can of home depot flat black spray paint or $150 for hardware in our fw. It's been 3 years and there are a few that could use another coat.
