Letchworth State Park(The Grand Canyon of the East) is great and there are RV parks inside and nearby. Letchworth State Park
Sorry; I just have to comment on this one. We stayed there two years ago and I'd rate it on the low end of the scale for a place to stay (views were beautiful though - and I didn't use the word SIGHTS).
First they charge extra for a toad (even though I paid and registered online with two vehicles). Was told it was the park manager's policy - every MH with a toad has to pay for a second vehicle at the gate, never mind what all other state parks do.
Most state parks have nice sites, this one crowds everyone side by side like a KOA - not what we were used to. We had no fire pit (moved by some other campers and park wardens did not respond to requests to have one brought in - rules on pets and noise were not enforced), I hate cleaning dog poo from my site and the neighbors dogs urinated on my front tire as well. Personally I would never stay there again.
Stay somewhere else and visit the park.
Other parks to consider are Lakeside Park between Syracuse and Rochester but further north, Sampson State park (nice park with large spaces on a former Navy Base in the Finger Lakes region) and our favorite - Robert Moses State Park near Massena (real up-state).
Chris
Sorry you had a bad experience, but that's not been ours. We were there a couple weeks ago and had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Half the sites were empty, which suits us just fine! September would be a great time to go as the crowds would be minimal to nonexistent.
