Used Class A's

I've been looking at used A's & C's on RV Trader. It seems that Class A's are less expensive than Class C's , comparing mileage, year & condition.

Am i missing something? Does a Class C hold it's value better than a Class A? Why would a seemingly "more" motor home cost less?......

Wanted to add that i'm looking in the 35K-40K price range

  • Market value and technical value have VERY loose connection.
Every design has its good and bad parts.
Mentioned accident protection in ClassC is important for one and ignored by other.
I did own almost all kind of RVs (one I am missing from collection is 5th wheel) and each one is good for different purposes.
Would I plan to drive RV a lot, I would go for ClassC or SuperC.
Would RV be park for long time ClassA or trailer is better for long-term living.

This same scenario also exists in at least one model in every manufacturer's Class A lineup. Another head scratcher. Since Electric cab over bunks and bunk beds, as well as dinette and sofa conversions are pretty common in Class A's any more it's no longer a Class C only benefit. My 30' A could sleep 8 if I wanted. 6 Comfortably.

  • When we were looking, protection in an accident plus more ways to exit the vehicle entered in the equation.

  • That is how we ended up with a class A. We set out to buy a class C and when viewing them it didn't cost much more to go class A. We never looked back:)

I think that there is an overarching belief that Class C's are easier and cheaper to own, easier to drive and maneuver, and overall less intimidating so there is a higher demand. All of us who have driven one or own an rv know that this is not necessarily true. I think there is also a belief that Class A's are for the rich and cost a lot to own as well as difficult to operate. I can't tell you how many people asked us when we owned our RV rental business if they needed a special license to drive an A. It was about 75% of the people. So demand is lower. I would say most people looking for a motorhome that have no experience with RV's will start looking at C's.
  • I was originally leaning toward a Class C then a friend told me he was in the same position a few months back. He sold his 5th wheel and started looking at C's but found out he could more "bang for the buck" with a Class A.
  • We couldn't understand that either when we were looking. We bought an A and are very happy with our choice. I think some people buy a C because they think they won't be able to drive an A.
  • From my experience there is very little difference in operating costs. I have had 4 A's 3 C's and a B. I prefer a nice A to a C any day because of the tendency of Cs to leak in the cabover section.
  • There is such a wide variation in terms of features, quality, condition etc that I think it is hard to generalize. I would figure which type you want (A or C) and go from there. Ignore price issues until you narrow it down.
