It makes me chuckle when I hear people say they would NEVER stay in a rest area because it's waaaay too dangerous.
I don't think you'd find too many 2 bit crooks with the time, vehicle and gas money to drive up & down the Interstate just so they can stop at rest areas to see who they can rob.
Wally Worlds on the other hand, seem to be way too handy to the less desirable members of our society, and places they seem to frequent to boot.
