I've found that the winds tend to know which way I'm going... and can whip around in an instant to make sure that they stay as headwinds. :C
It seems to me as I head south from ND/MN to AZ that the winds are most commonly from the NW... except when they aren't.
It definitely makes a difference in the mileage... for me about 2 mpg.
