I'll second this thought.
The North Rim is a rustic area with National Park amenities. The South Rim is completely different. To me, it was a huge tourist trap. The only thing good on the South side was the trolleys and the views.
More then likely both campgrounds on both sides are full. 2 years ago I road the motorcycle out that way and stayed at Jacob Lake Campground just outside the park on the North side. Watch for deer going in or out of the North Rim.
Good luck getting a spot inside the park.
