Water tank gauge

The water tank level gauge is all over the place. Is there a proper calibration method? The adjustments I am trying are not working.

  • If the OP has an Aladdin system in his Monaco, it does use a pressure gauge of sorts. It can be calibrated, as I say if it is an Aladdin. His manual should tell him how to do it. He can PM me for specific instructions if he'd like. Almost all the Monaco products use this system. The problem, holstien13 is that in many cases they mounted them so that "****" could interfere with the readings. My tanks read very accurately, especially the fresh water that the OP mentioned.
  • My tank gauge is both reliable and can be calibrated. It's not an electrode sticking into the tank. It's not a sonar stuck on the side of the tank, no, It's a pressure gauge that's at the bottom of the tank.

The more pressure, the more full the tank. When they installed it at the Factory, they calibrated it for zero full and 100% full. Now it reads accurately in 1% increments.

I don't understand why all manufacturers don't use a pressure gauge.
  • One of the best things I've done to our last two coaches is to install the accurate and reliable SeeLevel II tank monitoring system. The external sensors are much less affected by crud in the tanks, and the percentage readouts are much more useful than the typical "Empty,1/3,2/3,Full" readouts.
  • One of the best things I have done on my coach is move enough stuff that I can see how much water is in the tank. That is by far the easiest and most reliable method I have found. I just wish that my waste tanks were also translucent so that I could see the levels in them too.
  • If you're gettings readings all over the place it's likely that there is something, like toilet paper in the black tank, or a film of grease in the grey tank causing it by covering the probes. You can buy several styles of spray systems that are directed at washing off those contaminates or you can replace the OEM probes with Horst Miracle Probes. I've only read reviews for these and it seems they work OK.

I just go by the grey tank readings in my rig. When it shows 3/4 full, I dump both tanks. Can't trust the black tank readings.
  • There isn't, to my knowledge, a calibration method to basic tank level indicator. Waste tank readings are problematic due to the stuff in the water that can affect the sensors. Flushing after dumping helps but also check all the sensor connections and the ground point for possible corrosion which could cause additional problems.

I flush the tanks after each outing (if possible) and have found the sensors for my tanks are for the most part accurate although I don't think the installer correctly positioned the sensors. I seem to hit the 1/3 level of the 30 gallon black and 40 gallon gray tanks the first time anything goes down the drain and 2/3 not long after. Hitting full will take a few days.

Well, I guess I'm not in my rig mind, as I look at them on a regulator basis. Not just to see tank levels (a general indication anyway), but to see if either holding tank needs something added to help clean them, or just a good flush. If I get a 3/4 full on the black tank, a 1/2 full on the gray tank, and the fresh is still nearly full, I know that the holding tanks need some help. Nothing is worse that having water backup in your shower, unless it is not having the toilet flush.`

  • I suspect that the man who invents an RV water gauge that is accurate, reliable, and practical will become very wealthy.
