Water Works Question

Why does my fresh water tank pump (Shurflo pump) automatically come on every time I switch from City Water to Fresh Water Fill. I don't understand why this pump comes on? The noise of this pump bothers me since it's on for so long! If my water system wasn't charged I can understand it coming on to fill the hot water tank?

  • Thanks, GP Wayne, I'll shut off the pump! I do use RV designed hoses I have a 10' hose and a 25' hose but, I was over 50' from faucet so I used our garden hose. The DW and I do not use the water in our Freshwater Tank for drinking or cooking.
  • What you are seeing is normal! Shut pump off when filling tank.

    Check your manual.

You can run the pump when hooked up to city water if the tank has water in it. For more pressure, like taking a shower. (If city water pressure is low)
But not while filling the tank.

You should not use a "garden hose" on your MH as they are not designed for potable water(Yuck) and may not withstand pressure for long periods.
Use an RV hose designed for that purpose.
  • When you can find several designs for the system, usually camper system is having separating check valve from fresh water system.
So either you have poorly design system, or your check valve is stuck open.
  • Thanks for your response! I wasn't aware of water pressure. Were dry camping along side our house while construction is going on inside the house. I refilled the fresh water tank today with our garden hose as it was getting low.
  • As posted...system pressure drops when you swap from city water to 'FILL'.
Pump comes on to try and build system pressure but it can not do so cause of 'FILL'

When in 'FILL' water pump just goes Round-Robin.......sucks water from fresh water tank and discharges back to fresh water tank thru 'FILL'

WHY do you have pump ON when using city water?

FYI....Pump is a diaphragm type design that can run dry w/o harm. But it can pump fresh water tank empty if unnoticed leak did occur
  • It's trying to maintain the pressure in the fresh water system. Switching to fill the tank drops that pressure. Why not switch the pump off when you don't need it? If left on all the time, especially if you leave the coach unattended, if you get a leak you'll pump whatever is in the water tank out through the leak, then burn up the pump.
