Craig95005, I think a lot depends on how healthy you both are being in your 70's.
I can tell you now that I'm really tired of humidity (in the south). I grew up in it and now that I have a vacation home in California, I'm in heaven. I still have to come back to the humid area for family business, etc.
If I were to live in one place in my mature years, it would be Southern California or Arizona (I know that you mentioned you live in CA). Ideally, if you chose California, having a condo in San Diego and one in the Palm Springs (or nearby desert city) is the perfect set-up. Eights months in the desert, four months at the coast (as close to the water as you can get).
