First off, remember that your RV is just a toy. You really don't need it. That is the reason dealers charge so much for service. Second. they pay the mechanic about 9 - 10 dollars an hour. So the price you pay is to pay for that large building and lot in a high rent area even if they don't sell any RVs.
I think some of you are under estimating what a good tech gets paid. In my part of the country good repair techs are earring well over $10 hr. Keep in mind that $10 hr is only $20,000 per year. A good mechanic in any trade will earn 3-4 times that amount. An old rule of thumb was that you needed to charge 3 times your hourly cost just to break even. I.e. A tech earning $40 per hour would need to bring in $120 hr. to break even.
The problem I have run into is that the "good" tech is not being assigned to some of the service work that is thought to be easy and routine. That type of work is often assigned to the low man on the totem pole because the repair shops want to utilize their best techs for the most difficult repairs. That is just fine if every thing works out OK but can lead to some real messed up repairs if someone is not making sure that the repairs that the low man on the totem pole is doing are being done correctly.
