As for tools, I agree that it is very easy to go overboard. My compromise was to wait for one of those cheap "150 piece" mechanic's tool kits to go on sale at Sears (brand X, not "Craftsman)". They come in a nice plastic case and, since the tools are cheap, they don't weigh that much. Not the tools I would by for every-day use, but they will get you thorough an emergency.
