what is a toad?

I see two possibilities for the origin of the term. Both are equally probable, and both may be part of the story. The first would be that it was simply a colloquialization of the term "towed". The second is that it originated as an acronym: "Towed On A Dolly" (as Frog represents "Four Rolling On Ground") and eventually became a generic term referring to all towed vehicles.
