Here's a good site to make some comparisons on what's out there, for what price and a look at floorplans. They also have a diesel section.

Our feeling is not to put floorplan as the first thing you look at. A floorplan does no good if the RV falls apart around you.
If you can find one from a private party, ask for all the maintenance/repair records so you can study if regular maintenance was done, etc.
Run all the systems and check carefully for any water stains.
Tire age can be an item used to negotiate.
Going to an owner's home to look at one can sometimes be an eye-opener as to how they might have taken care of the RV.
If in doubt, make the condition of buying it on being able to take it to a mechanic for a once-over - with you paying, most likely.
Buy within your budget. Don't get into debt over a RV. Allow part of your budget for repairs.
... and yes, go on the roof and make sure the caulking has been kept up and the roof is in good condition. Keep in mind that a clean roof lasts longer.
