It's one vehicle length per 10 miles per hour so rush hour on and bumper to bumper on interstate going though Dallas traveling at 60 miles per hour with a 60 foot coach (include toad) you would have to maintain 360 feet of following distance. Do you think that is possible without some pulling into that space?
Again on Interstate with bumper to bumper traffic and come over a hill and see cop having someone pulled over and the lane next to you is bumper to bumper do you just stop to avoid passing the cop and wait for opening?
The above happened to me in Dallas and did the samething the OP did except I didn't get ticket or pulled over.
