With a related question - why does my 3/4 gas truck put out 410HP/430Torque with a GCWR of 19,000# while the one with 30,000# only puts out 320/460? I know higher torque is better and the gearing is better. I guess I'm just surprised coming from an HD truck w/5th wheel into a class A. On the surface I'm surprised the numbers aren't a bit higher for the heavy class A units.
Medium Duty trucks are built for a more demanding duty cycle and longer service life. That's why F550 and Ram 5500s only have about 300 HP in their 6.7L diesels, vs 385 or 400+ for the 3/4 and 1-ton models. Also, the V10 was rated for 365 HP until this year, but it was changed to meet the new Greenhouse Gas standards for MDTs, but also because they changed how they rate it too. From everything reported so far by owners of new units, the new 320 HP V10 outperforms the old 365 version. It's possible that if they were both rated under the same method, the number would be closer. But the new V10 also makes more torque at a lower RPM, so its has a flatter HP curve, making more power available more often, instead of in a narrow MPH window at the top of each gear. And, it has another gear too.
