What you've been waiting for,,,Transit campervan

I saw someone's DIY conversion last week on Interstate 81 at a rest stop. I was nothing to really talk about, so I didn't mention it.

Here's something a bit more professional....

  • The opening door to the bath is a head scratcher to me though.

They do the door that way to have easy access for dumping the cassette toilet.
A much superior system for a travelling type of person who does not go to camprounds for dumping everytime.
Just pull out the drawer and dump it out, takes about 30 seconds.

Look how much better the windows are than our North American heat loss, condensation making glass walled vans... They open, with screens and night shades all built in the window frame...

    Light years ahead..

    Nice van...
  • That is a terrible layout, although they didn't show a huge amount of detail in the video.

It's not designed for tall Americans, for sure--that is only the mid-height roof on the Transit. At 5'10", I have only about 1" clearance, it's pretty claustrophobic. The highest roof option is the only thing that will sell in the US, IMHO.

The 148" wheelbase is a much better platform, even in the regular body style. The extended body on the 148" wheelbase is a very nice size for a conversion.

There is only about $4K difference between the smallest & largest sizes, that's a lot of cubic feet for the buck, and well worth it.

Looks like JAPAN is going for something similar. This was posted here a couple of days ago...

    Quote from MBUTTS
"Interesting documentary on Japanese K cars. Fast forward to about 15:10 in the video to see a few micro class C campers."

    Japenese KEI CARS

  • Maybe.

If they go short wheelbase like in this example I posted, then the Promaster offers more space as it's a wider van with no drive shaft down the middle.

My opinion is the Transit is more compelling in the longer wheelbase/dually version as an alternative to the Sprinter.

I do think this layout is interesting with the L shaped kitchen. The opening door to the bath is a head scratcher to me though.
  • I think the Travato is a much better design than that, on a dodge chassis. has a real bed, real toilet not a portapot, etc.

  • It will be interesting to see if any of the US makers will adopt this platform. It could have a huge upside in the B market
