When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

I believe you answered your own question with your last paragraph. There is no hard and fast rule. Although I never heard of adding a state sticker for just flying over that state.

As for myself, we do not add state to our collection until we actually camp over night in that state.
