When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

There are 2 common approaches. Some, like myself, color the state if I have driven though it in an RV. Others only color the state if they had an overnight stop in the state in their RV.
