When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

We do "stayed in". This led to a questions to a post from a responder "How do you get from SC to FL without going through GA?".

I'm going to have a few holes to fill in on the next trip, but that's a good theme for a road trip.

This trip's theme seems to be "Eating our way across the south".
