When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

Once again, it is your map and your rules. We count any state we have been in using any RV we have owned - not just the current one. To us, we are journaling all the places we have explored in an RV.
