When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

I'm not okay with you all doing however you'd like! How can I tell anything about you? ;)

We decided it doesn't really have to do with the camper. It is more about whether or not we saw a sight in that state while the camper is with us. In other words, we claim Texas, but all we did was stop at the Cadillac Ranch for 20 minutes.
