When have I reasonably earned a state sticker?

Just got a US state sticker map. Idea is that the kids can put stickers on the map (mounted on RV) as we travel through other states. My question is; is there a commonly accepted rule of thumb that...

OK, here is my question, Is the map in question the 'old' style solid color map, like many have on their posts? or is the new style with the 'pictures'? If the former WHERE DID YOU FIND IT?!!!!
