When to throw in the towel on an older motorhome

Never give in. Never give up! My 1988 Country Coach sometimes makes me want to stop RVing completely. But then I get over it and love what I am doing. If you can't afford large repair bills, can you afford a big loan payment? Which is worse? If the answer is neither then you do need to sell it or scrap it and get out from under this burden. Old stuff is expensive to keep up but it can still be WAY less expensive than the costs involved with paying for a substantially newer RV.
