Our previous motorhome had the ladder on the back. I never put the attachment on the lower part. I would use my six foot A-frame ladder and walk up that, grab the attached ladder and climb on up.
Our new coach does not have an attached ladder. It came with one of those folding extension type. I have not been on the roof yet and really debating if I will ever go up. I don't like heights, especially, if there is nothing to hold onto going up and over the roof (like handles similar to the attached ladder).
I may get brave and give it a try. I have climbed up the ladder and looked over to see the air conditioners, satelllite dish, etc. I also put a towel over the end of the ladder to protect the coaches finish.
