In my opinion the typical RV roof ladder, attached to the back of the rig, is not nearly up to the job of getting people up on the roof safely.. in fact it is so bad I pulled mine off, NOTE, I did not unscrew it, I simply pulled it off the RV, the brackets could not hold my weight (I did remove the roof end mounts and properly seal them)
Instead I put on a couple of J hooks, solidly mounted they hold me weight well, (Either of them) and I hung a convertable (Extension/step) ladder on them the bottom end got a shower "Assist" bar and I both chain (Bicycle lock) and bungee the ladder to that bar.. So far I've had one problem, which I fixed.
This ladder is rated 250 pounds, tested to 500 and has no problem with my 300 plus.
Additionally I have climbed both vertical ladders (Wall ladders) and standard extension ladders (The latter professionally for seven years) and the standard slanted extension ladder, set up at the proper angle, is way, way, way, way easier to climb,, Easier to mount and dismount at the roof as well.. I feel far more secure using it.
I can just imagine someone missing their step getting off the roof on the fairly poorly designed verticle ladder and suing the RV manufacturer for his injuries.. And I suspect, the Manufacturers legal depart is more imaginative than I in this respect.
