More than likely, 8888 is not so much an error code as just an indication that the little controller brain is stuck and not "booting up," so to speak. The default state for the display segments is apparently lit up (when first powered up and the microcontroller is in a reset state), and then it sets them to display normal stuff when it starts running its software. If it's not running, they'd stay all lit.
At any rate, the advice here seems sound to me...if disconnecting from power doesn't make it work, replace the controller board. It may be repairable by someone with enough skill and experience, depending on exactly what the problem is, but there's also a good chance that's not a realistic option (if, for instance, the microcontroller with its proprietary code programmed in was zapped and is now dead).
