I think if I already owned a vehicle capable of towing a travel trailer, I would seriously consider the travel trailer. You can get a lot more trailer for the same money of an RV.
We don't have a tow vehicle, nor do I want one as I do not like towing with the RV, though we do have a utility trailer we sometimes use. I find backing up virtually impossible with the class C with a trailer and I do not attempt it. But otherwise, I can drive it like a car.
If we go someplace and need to leave site I can disconnect the utilities, raise the jacks, push in the stairs and in 10 minutes I'm ready to go.
To me, the real benefit of a "driving" RV is that passengers can enjoy the trip a lot better than in a car. You can get up and move around if you want. You can go to the bathroom if you want. You can go raid the fridge and make a snack if you want. Of course the driver is stuck no matter what you're driving but if you have a passenger they can fetch you snacks anyway. :)
