Why are the RV classes "A" - "B" - "C" ?

I fully know the difference between the three main classes of RVs, I was recently asked why the respective classes are the letter they are. I can't think of a logical reason where the nomenclature originated, but I'm sure there is some basis.

Please enlighten me! :)

Thanks,

    Almost like Dennis... A B C are quality designations.:W
  • Little known fact: RV styles were originally called "John Adams", "James Buchanan" and "Grover Cleveland", to honor all of our presidents. That got changed to "A", "B", and "C" when it became clear that not all the presidents deserved to be honored. :)

RVIA came up with those designations. Someone outside that industry association, not party to discussions of the committee that did the work, would be just guessing at the "why" of it.

    Do tell...
Is that by way of saying that you yourself are an insider that was present during the deliberations?

I am not a RVIA member or manufacturer. Just saying if you are outside, you are speculating about reasons any standards group chose the names used in their standards.

Well, I guess that makes two of us "speculators", then! :B

I didn't make up a story. Are you saying RVIA did not create the RVIA classification?

Well, since RVIA is essentially a marketing organization I think it's entirely possible- even probable- that they did. As to how/why they chose the "lettering", I think the explanation I posted (not my invention, by the way) is the most likely- especially since it appears to match historical (if anecdotal) evidence.
