My logic: If I have a spare tire and tire changing equipment, jumper cables, etc., I can always find someone who can help me get the vehicle running again. But no matter how many people I have around that are willing to help, if I don't have the equipment, I'm not going anywhere. And the more uncommon the parts, the less likely I'm going to find them when I need them.
I'm not going to worry that the spare tire is adding 100lbs to my rig. If that is going to make or break me, then I really need to be looking at everything else I'm carrying.
