I have seen you guys sitting on the side of the road for hours waiting for someone to finally arrive with a correct tire. I remember trying to help someone on a secluded Forest Service Road in Colorado once with a flat tire and having no way to help them because they had no spare. There they sat without even cell phone coverage 40 miles from help. I would have been back on the road in 5-10 minutes with a spare and a few simple tools. The weight penalty of a spare is worth it for the simple piece of mind if nothing else.
The first day of Boy Scouts, they teach the lesson - "Be Prepared." We can't prepare for every possible emergency but it isn't hard to prepare for 75% of the most common emergencies with a few tools, etc..
