Window AC

I have a 94 Toyota motorhome and have been playing with using a window AC. Not a duk tape install in a window, something different.

I have an LG 8000btu AC with remote. My first attempt was to Mod it to fit inside a roof air carcase and install on the roof. I lack the knowledge and resources to do this, but gave it a try and failed. I suspect it would work with an old technology AC unit?

Now I am looking at installing it where the 2 way refrigerator is, replacing the fridge with an electric and using the roof refrigerator vent as the vent. I may have seen this someplace. But multiple web searchs are not turning up anything.

Anyone with any experience doing this, or know a site where it was done?

Any input, thoughts, ideas or wisecracks greatly appreciated. Jim

  • When they mount little A/C in some class B's and maybe now smaller trailers, the back end of the A/C butts up against a grill to the outside for ventilation. I wanted to mount our 5000 BTU unit like that but the position was bad for circulation and cooling. This year I used a brace to hold it in the front window and it worked great. I'll rebuild the holder, it will still be temporary but it'll look better.
  • The goal is to be able to operate with a 2K Honda generator. I have an 11K roof unit, not a power saver that will not operate off the Honda in hot humid conditions even though I installed a soft start capacitor. Works well up to about 90°.

An 11K power saver is just pass the limits of the Honda and will not be dependable.

The new Atwood?? is claimed to operate on a 2000 watt generator under most conditions. The little Honda is not a 2000 watt generator! And Atwood is not publishing specs to make any kind of informed decision.
  • Seems like I've seen window ACs installed in a few new small trailers using fridge vents for one side of the airflow. As I recall it is when the window AC is built into a cabinet so the back of the AC unit is flush (or nearly flush) with the side of the trailer. The fridge vent vents the portion of the airflow inside the cabinet.

Whats your goal with this? To use an AC you already have? If it is power savings there are power saver roof air models which may work for you.
  • I use one on occasion when it is really really hot coupled with my 13.5 ac or when I want to run air on my 2K Honda and it's mildly hot and just need to take the heat down inside a notch or two...

I use the windows for it depending on the window type.In my Class C 21 ft,any window would work especially the kitchen slider.I have seen two that remodeled the rear window and a perm install..I am not interested in a perm install that requires rv modification so I can't help in that department.

Will any of your windows work?..This is mine in a travel trailer, haven't used it in the C.
